I started producing my own shows, as Remote Control in Vancouver in 1979. These dance performances toured Sweden, Australia, and England from 1979-1983, when I returned to Canada to live, this time in Toronto.
My solo performance work is inspired by an eclectic mix of dance, theatre, English Music Hall, stage combat and butoh. I received the Paula Citron fFIDA Award in 1999 for Bogie Woman and a Dora nomination in 2002 for Body Geometry, 7th Angel.
While dance is the underlying art form in my work, I will often include other styles of performance, including whip, sword or character work, calling it dance theatre. On-going research into my culture, dances and spiritual traditions has been inspiring a passion for exploring and connecting contemporary and the traditional. Since my ‘roots’ mean England, I have been incorporating clog dance into my recent work.
